London Overview

Its status as the capital city of the United Kingdom makes London one of the most influential cities in the world since it was founded by the Romans. Its position as a world class city is as a result of its influence in fashion, arts, politics, entertainment, culture, media and education. It is home to over 100 of the most prominent businesses in the continent. It is among the three hubs of the world’s economy together with Tokyo and New York. The city contributes to about 20% of the country’s GDP which can be attributed to the business friendly policies.
This city is also popular among tourists in both the overseas and domestic regions. This popularity can be partly attributed to the four heritage sites that include the Royal Botanic Gardens, Tower of London, Kew and the area that has the Westminster Abbey, St. Margaret Church and the Palace of Westminster.
London has a population of over 8 million that comprises of various ethnic groups.� It has been dominated by the Christian faith since its inception and this is one of the reasons that it has very many churches. Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, Buddhists, Hindus and Pagans are also found among the London population.
One of the most distinct geographical features you will see in London is the Thames River. The climate is temperate marine which means you will not experience any extreme low or high temperatures here. It is moderately dry but there is usually some precipitation that occurs all year round but snow is not common.
There are various tourist attractions in the capital such as the London Zoo, Hyde Park and Madame Tussauds. The West End and the theatre district offer a wide range of entertainment while the Oxford Street is one of the busiest streets in Europe because of its numerous shops and stores. The city houses many designers including Manolo Blahnik, Vivienne Westwood, Jimmy Choo, Galliano and Stella McCartney making it one of the fashion capitals of the world.
The ethnic diversity in the city has resulted in a variety of cuisine to choose from in the many restaurants that dot the streets. There are many parades that are held in London each year to commemorate certain traditional events. The capital has on many occasions served as a setting for various literature and films.
Art lovers enjoy visiting the many art galleries and museums like the Natural History Museum, British Museum, Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The transport system in the city is among the most extensive in the globe and consists of the London Underground, a bus network and various airports.
